Purpose

HOW CAN WE SERVE YOU?

Since April 25, 1985, the Inland Empire Latino Lawyers Association, Inc. (IELLA), a non-profit legal service provider, has made it its mission to provide high-quality legal services to underserved residents of the Inland Empire. All of the services are rendered totally free of charge through our pro bono panel of dedicated volunteer attorneys. Thus, by making legal services available free of charge to our clients, IELLA seeks to ease the financial burden of these already disenfranchised individuals.

IELLA is a non-profit organization located in Southern California's Inland Empire. IELLA provides free legal aid to the poor and underprivileged residents in our service area (San Bernardino and Riverside Counties).

New Clients ADVISORY ON CLINIC PROCEDUREIELLA sees a limited number of clients at each clinic. In order to be considered for assistance you will need to be in line by starting time. IELLA cannot guarantee service to all those who wait in line. We assist with limited cases mainly: limited-civil and family law. If you are uncertain whether your case is an accepted case, please contact us for confirmation before attending a clinic. Briefly describe your legal matter to our staff and have your court case number, if applicable, available. We do not provide legal advice over the phone, the staff member that you will be speaking to cannot advice you about your case.Step 1:Determination of your case will be discussed with the Clinic Manager. You will individually meet with IELLA's Clinic Manager to quickly determine what type of legal matter you have. The Clinic Manager will sign you in. If you have a case that we can assist you with, we will provide you with a questionnaire and additional packets to fill out.Step 2:You will then be individually interviewed to determine if you are eligible for our services and document case related information on to an intake.Step 3:After the interview, clients will have a break (rest period) before speaking to a pro bono attorney.Step 4:You will have a confidential (10 to 30 minutes) consultation with a pro bono attorney to obtain legal counsel & advice. We will prepare the documents necessary for your particular case, based on the attorney's instructions. Keep in mind, that your legal paperwork is not prepared during our clinics. Unfortunately, because of the large number of clients that IELLA serves, our attorneys CANNOT provide in-court representation. PLEASE NOTE: The duration of the clinic, eligibility and legal advice, depends on the number of clients attending the clinic. You should expect to spend all afternoon and evening (possibly until 7 P.M. or later) at our Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. We recommend that you bring magazines, books, etc.We ask that you make arrangements for children, and that you not bring any friends or family members. Space is limited to those who are seeking services only.

Eligibility

Eligibility Requirements

You must physically live in either Riverside or San Bernardino County.

IELLA is able to help U.S. citizens, legal residents, and non-legal residents.

If your case is opened in Riverside or San Bernardino County, but you reside outside of Riverside or San Bernardino Counties, we will not be able to assist you.

You must have a legal matter that we assist with. We assist with limited civil and family law. If you are uncertain whether your case is an accepted case, please contact us for confirmation before attending a clinic. Briefly describe your legal matter to our staff and have your court case number, if applicable, available. We do not provide legal advice over the phone, the staff member that you will be speaking to cannot advice you about your case.

Since we receive federal and non-federal funds such as from United Way and the State Bar of California, we must adhere to their specific requirements. We do not disclose our eligibility guidelines.

If you have a case that we can help you with, you must attend a legal aid clinic to determine if you are eligible for our services.

You will be asked to sign an Asset and Debt Acknowledgment and Declaration of Income under penalty of perjury that the information you provided was correct.

We do not determine eligibility over the phone.

FAQs

Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat type of Cases do you Assist With? IELLA assists with limited civil and family law cases. This includes: divorces/legal separations/annulments, custody/visitation, child support, spousal support, restraining orders, limited civil complaints, eviction defense, consumer rights, collection cases, and small claims demands. However, if the case is beyond the capabilities of IELLA we reserve the right to refuse service. Please call our office for further information.Can I schedule an appointment? No. All clients must attend our clinic and are served on a 1st come 1st serve basis for weekly clinics. However, there is a Saturday clinic that is available once a month on the last Saturday of the month. Interested persons may call the office and ask if they can be added to the client list for Saturday. The Clinic Manager will contact you at their earliest convenience to provide more information. Space for Saturday clinic is limited and may not be available every month due to holidays or if no volunteer attorneys are available to volunteer on that day.Can I attend on behalf of my friend or family member? No. The person seeking legal advice needs to be physically present.How do I know if I qualify? The qualification process is determined at our legal aid clinics. Please see the "New Clients" section for a detailed explanation about the clinic process.Can you answer legal questions over the phone? No. Our staff members are not licensed attorneys and cannot provide legal advice. To speak to an attorney you need to attend a legal aid clinic. Staff members answering phones can only provide you with information about services and whether you have a case that IELLA can assist with.Can I bring my children and/or moral support? No. Space is limited to those who are seeking services only. Furthermore, you will be expected to stay late, and we cannot accommodate your children or family/friends.Do you only help Latinos? No. Race/ethnicy is not a determinant for qualification for our legal services.Do I have to speak to an attorney? Yes. It is mandatory that you consult with an attorney.Will there be breaks during clinic? Yes. After you have been interviewed, you will have time to eat and use the restroom; there are plenty of local restaurants.Do I need to bring an interpreter? We are able to provide translation services for most languages.You have helped me before, do I still need to attend your legal clinic if I need more help? Yes. All previous clients must attend a clinic if your last clinic visit was more than 30 days ago. Do you assist walk-ins? No. You must attend a clinic to begin any type of assistance. Please refer to the "Hours and Locations " section for clinic days and locations.
